Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962) was an American diplomat, activist, and politician who served as the First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945 during the presidency of her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, she was more than just a First Lady. Eleanor was a trailblazer who used her position and influence to promote civil and human rights, education, and women’s rights.

Eleanor’s early life was marked by personal tragedy, including the loss of her parents and the illness and eventual death of her husband, Franklin. However, these experiences only strengthened her resolve to make a positive impact in the world. She began her public career as a volunteer with the Red Cross during World War I and went on to become an advocate for social justice and human rights.

As First Lady, Eleanor transformed the role from a traditional ceremonial position to an active one. She traveled extensively throughout the country, meeting with ordinary Americans and reporting back to her husband on their concerns. She also championed causes such as the New Deal, which aimed to provide relief and recovery to those affected by the Great Depression, and the Civil Rights Movement, which sought to end racial discrimination and segregation.
